How the calculation works
The NIDDK 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation is 142 × min(SCr/κ,1)^α × max(SCr/κ,1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 if female, where κ and α are sex-specific constants.
Worked example
For a 50-year-old man with serum creatinine of 1.0 mg/dL, eGFR is approximately 92 mL/min/1.73 m².
Understanding the result
This calculation is intended for adults and assumes creatinine values are appropriately standardized. It is not interchangeable with Cockcroft–Gault creatinine clearance for every drug-dosing decision.
Kidney disease evaluation considers persistence over time, urine albumin, clinical presentation and other data. Rapidly changing creatinine can make creatinine-based eGFR unreliable.
Limitations
For adults 18 years or older. Pediatric equations differ; a single eGFR estimate does not diagnose chronic kidney disease.
