Daily Calorie Deficit & Goal Calculator

A calorie deficit means taking in less energy than your body expends over time. This tool combines a rough maintenance estimate with a user-selected daily deficit.

How the calculation works

Estimated maintenance calories = Mifflin–St Jeor BMR × activity factor. Illustrative intake target = estimated maintenance calories − selected daily deficit.

Worked example

Estimated maintenance at 2,300 kcal/day, minus a 250-kcal daily deficit, produces an illustrative target of 2,050 kcal/day.

Understanding the result

Energy balance is useful for understanding the general direction of weight change, but weight loss is not a straight-line calculation. The body adapts over time, and water balance can change short-term scale readings.

Adequate nutrition matters. Discuss individualized targets with a qualified healthcare professional when pregnant, breastfeeding, underweight, medically complex, or recovering from an eating disorder.

Limitations

This tool does not forecast a guaranteed weekly loss, prescribe a safe intake, or replace nutrition counseling.
