Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Calculator

Basal metabolic rate estimates the energy needed for essential body functions at rest. Use your age, height, weight, and the equation’s sex coefficient to get an approximate daily calorie value.

How the calculation works

This calculator uses the Mifflin–St Jeor resting energy expenditure equation. For men: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age (years) + 5. For women: the same expression minus 161 instead of plus 5.

Worked example

For a 35-year-old woman who weighs 75 kg and is 170 cm tall, the estimate is approximately 1,477 kcal/day.

Understanding the result

BMR is not the same as the number of calories you need to maintain your weight. Walking, exercise, digestion, and ordinary activity all add to total daily expenditure.

Prediction equations give population-based estimates. Individual needs can differ due to body composition, health status, pregnancy, medication, and other factors.

Limitations

For adults only. A calculated BMR does not replace an individual evaluation or indirect calorimetry.
