Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) Calculator

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) approximates average pressure across an arterial pulse cycle. Nurses and other clinicians use it alongside the broader clinical picture when assessing circulation.

How the calculation works

The common noninvasive approximation is MAP = DBP + (SBP − DBP) ÷ 3. Equivalently, MAP = (SBP + 2 × DBP) ÷ 3.

Worked example

For a blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg, MAP is approximately 93.3 mm Hg.

Understanding the result

This shortcut assumes the usual proportion of systolic to diastolic time. It can deviate from actual mean pressure at unusual heart rates and in some hemodynamic conditions.

A number alone does not establish adequate perfusion. Clinical context, symptoms, organ function, and the method of measurement all matter.

Limitations

Informational estimation only. Follow clinical monitoring methods and institutional protocols.
